UH 1H Inlet Barrier Filtration System

APU Systems

Blackhawk UH-60 APU Inlet Barrier System

Part Number 104003-101, Honeywell GTCP36-150(BH)

APU's operating in sandy and dusty conditions are subject to ingesting large quantities of sand and debris. Damage to internal portions of the APU result in a loss of turbine efficiency when coupled with compromised aerodynamics of the compressor section causes stalling and low performance.

An inlet barrier filter extends the life of the APU while operating in sandy and dusty environments without having a large impact on performance.

The barrier filter system for the Honeywell GTCP36-150(BH) APU utilizes the same filter assemblies as both the Hamilton Sundstrand T62T-40-1 APU for the H-60 and the T62T-2B APU for the CH-47. The filters are capable of separating over 99% of either AC Coarse or AC Fine test dust. This allows the APU to reach its scheduled TBO with minimal damage to the sensitive gas path hardware. The system includes a filter maintenance aid (FMA) that allows filters to be removed for cleaning when a certain pressure drop is reached and not when they appear to be dirty leading to an on-condition approach to maintenance.

Blackhawk UH-60 APU Inlet Barrier System

Part Numbers 104002-101, Hamilton Sundstrand T62T-40-1

The inlet barrier filter for the H-60 series aircraft is designed to minimize the impact on the APU and airframe and is optimized for maximum flow characteristics. The system includes an A kit which moves APU components, a B kit which installs adapter plates to mount the filter assemblies and a C kit which are the filters themselves. The filter assemblies are common for both the H-60 and the CH-47 aircraft.

The barrier filter system employs high separation filter material with greater than 99% efficiency on both AC Coarse and AC fine test dust. This high efficiency allows the IBF equipped APU to reach established TBO’s without internal damage to the bleed driven components or erosion damage to the diffuser and rotating components.

The system has been designed for the maximum maintainability with quick and easy servicing, replaceable and reusable barrier filter assemblies (15 cleaning cycles) and on-condition cleaning based on an integral filter maintenance indicator.

The barrier filter system has undergone Army qualification to include performance/operability testing, system vibration testing, and altitude start evaluation.

CH-47 APU Inlet Barrier Filter System

Part Number 104004-101, Hamilton Sundstrand T62T-40-1 APU

The CH-47 APU IBF system can be installed on the Hamilton Sundstrand T62T-2B APU. The system can be installed in versions of the CH-47 helicopter that include the CH-47 D/G, MH-47 E/F. The CH-47 APU IBF system is designed to filter all air entering the APU inlet. The design includes integral seals to eliminate unfiltered secondary air sources from entering the inlet.

The filter media for this application has been tested, per SAE J726. A filtration capture efficiency of 99% in AC Coarse Sand and AC Fine Sand was demonstrated.

The CH-47 APU IBF fits on the APU with minimal modification to the APU and aircraft structure – there is no A kit (move APU components) required from Hamilton Sundstrand. The filter elements are reusable and easily removable for servicing. The filters are the same as those installed on the H-60 APU for commonality of use. With the IBF installed, the APU meets all of its design performance requirements throughout the operating envelope of the aircraft including the extremes of temperature and altitude. The horsepower loss and increase in fuel flow as a result on installing the IBF kit is negligible, even with restricted filters.

A mechanical differential pressure indicator is provided with each CH-47/APU IBF installation kit. It provides a means for the ground crew to determine if the system requires servicing and allows tracking of filter assembly performance as an “on-condition” component. The indicator is located for easy access for the ground crew to visually check filter condition.

Apache AH-64A/D APU Inlet Barrier System

Part Number Model A 110001-101, Honeywell GTCP-36-55(H)
Part Number Model D 110002-101, Honeywell GTCP36-155(H)

The AH-64A/D APU IBF system is designed for installation on the Honeywell GTCP36-55[H] APU and GTCP36-155[H] respectively. The IBF system replaces Honeywell’s current inlet shroud. The AFS system is designed for minimum installation impact, low pressure loss and maximum APU engine performance. The AH-64A/D APU IBF system provides all the components required for mounting two identical barrier filter assemblies to the APU. The direct mounting provisions for the filter assemblies consists of mounting adapter plates that make use of the existing bolt pattern of the APU forward and aft of the existing engine cylindrical inlet which provides a sealed structural system to retain the filter assemblies. The AFS IBF installation kit also includes an alternate fuel line with mounting brackets for rerouting the APU fuel line. Clamps are provided to accommodate the relocated electrical wiring harness. Mounting provisions are also provided for a filter maintenance indicator (differential pressure indicator) and lines allowing maintenance personnel to check the condition of the system and determine if a service cycle is required on the filter assemblies. The Honeywell APU inlet shroud is replaced with AFS hardware which allows for additional inlet area.
